What are SES (Supplemental Educational Services)?
Supplemental Educational Services (SES) are FREE tutoring services available to increase the academic achievement of students from low-income families attending public schools that receive Title I funds and which are also designated as Program Improvement (PI), Year 2 or beyond.
Free tutoring services for students are funded by the No Child Left Behind (Title I) program.
Tutoring services are provided beyond the regular school day, are research-based, and support the core academic content and instruction used by the local school.
Lessons and learning goals are aligned with the state academic content standards in English-language arts (ELA), science and/or mathematics
Who is eligible to receive these services?
Eligible students are those who are from low-income families and who attend public schools identified as PI schools in Years 2-5. School districts have the responsibility of identifying eligible students for SES and offering parents the opportunity to sign up for these FREE services.
How do I know if my student qualifies for SES Services?
You need to contact your school and/or school district to find out if your child qualifies for this FREE tutoring.
Who offers this FREE tutoring?
Free tutoring is offered by California Department of Education-approved Supplemental Educational Services (SES) providers who contract with the local school district to offer tutoring to qualifying students in the district.
Who is an SES state-approved provider?
A provider of SES may be any public or private (non-profit or for-profit) entity that meets the State's criteria for approval. Public schools, including charter schools, private schools, and districts, county offices of education, educational service agencies, institutions of higher education, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private businesses, including sole proprietors, are among the types of entities that may apply for approval by the California Department of Education (CDE).
All potential providers are held to the same criteria. School districts, charter schools, and other public schools are not automatically considered approved providers. Rather, organizations can be providers if they meet the CDE's established criteria. Schools and school districts must go through the same approval process as all other potential providers. However, schools, including charter schools, and school districts that have been identified for PI may not be SES providers.
